Repositories and the Cloud – a higher education perspective

Is BETT ready for a challenge?

The annual BETT show is a great place for meeting people involved in all aspects of education.  However, it does create its own set of challenges for the educational community to really come up with disruptive and revolutionary innovation and to step up the pace of progression and adoption.

To that end, we throw down the gauntlet and challenge the sector to show us some real progression over the next 12 months.

Did we find the Cloud at BETT 2010?

The BETT 2010 show took place at Olympia in London last week (13-16 January 2010).  As the showcase of “British education and training technology” what better place to look for emerging trends in educational ICT strategy and implementation.

So, the big questions for Educloud to ask:

  • Has the potential of “utility computing” been embraced in education?
  • Is everyone “on the Cloud”?
  • Is the world of education now truly interconnected?

BETT 2010: was it really about future technology?

Last week saw the 26th BETT (British Education and Training Technology) show at Olympia, London taking place.  Billed as “the world’s largest educational technology event”, BETT is home to 700 stands and 29,000 visitors over its 4 days.  With all the major names in education technology innovation and supply on show it had to be the right place for Educloud to visit!

Does education really need Software as a Service (SaaS)?

Google ‘education software as a service’ and you will see there are approximately 148 billion results.

Talk to a teacher and it is likely that many of them will be unfamiliar with the term or realise the benefits of it.  Traditionally, educational software has been delivered ‘in a box’, whether that box contained a disk, CD-ROM or more recently, a school network where software was accessed from a PC or handheld device.

Software as a Service (SaaS) has been around since the late 90s/early 00s.  As it becomes more mainstream, education software suppliers are starting to take notice of this model and recognising the benefits associated with providing SaaS.

We’ll take a look at what all this means for education and answer the question: “does education really need SaaS?”
